About the Project

The UCD optical engineering research group will be supporting a candidate in applying for research funding for PhD studies in our group later this year, for research in numerical Fourier optics. The aim of the project is to research ways to incorporate digital optical elements into wave optics models, and hence to develop software for use in optonumerical systems such as digital holographic microscopes and for broader use in wave optical simulation. Digital elements such as spatial light modulators and coherent illumination arrays have become key tools in modern imaging techniques such as Fourier ptychography and light sheet microscopy.

The student will develop mathematical models and software, publish in international journals, and present posters and oral presentations at international conferences in the course of their studies. They will take a number of modules relevant to their studies. They will develop technical and soft skills which will serve them well in a future career in industry or academia.

If you are selected, you will be assisted in preparing an application. This application is due in October. Successfully funded candidates will be notified around April 2019 and receive PhD funding for 4 years. The funding covers your fees, a tax-free stipend, and some research expenses, beginning October 2019.

The successful candidate should have, or expect to have, an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or Applied Mathematics. A master’s degree in a relevant field would be advantageous. Please indicate any previous experience with MATLAB, signal processing, or optics. Applicants should also indicate whether or not they are native English speakers, and their scores in any IELTS or other English language tests.

The applied optics research group is led by Prof. John Sheridan and Dr John Healy. The group has experience with in a range of subjects across applied optics, especially in modelling of optical and digital optical systems and their applications. The group has strong industrial links, and experience in commercialization.
