About the Project

Wide Bandgap (WBG) SiC and GaN power semiconductor devices produce fast voltage transients with voltage rise-time (dv/dt) in excess of 10-30kV/us which are at least an order of magnitude faster than those seen in conventional Silicon-based power electronics
converters. These voltage transients are expected to have significant impact on the lifetime of the insulation of the connected electric machines.
This PhD project will advance our scientific understanding of the impact of WBG devices on electrical motors, investigate transient voltage distribution, failure mechanisms and develop novel online machine health monitoring tools.

You will join a leading group of academics and researchers at the frontiers of power electronics, electrical machines and drives in close collaboration with industry.

You should have, or be expected to gain, a BEng/MEng/MSc with first class honours in electrical/electronic engineering or closely related field, have a passion for electrical machines, power electronics and electric drives as well as good electronic design, embedded programming, and analytical and experimental skills.
You will be strongly encouraged to present and publish papers at leading international conferences and journals and interact with academic and industrial collaborators.
