Project Summary:
Technology in building design, simulation and intelligence in buildings are well-represented and making headlines with Building Information Modelling (BIM). However, BIM for existing buildings are much unexplored and under researched. Digitised building-survey information by 3D laser scanning and the efficient image processing is core to generate BIM models.

Specific Requirements of the Project

• Good knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its concepts
• Very good skills in IFC compliant software (eg. Revit, Microsystems, etc.)
• Computational skills in image processing and experiences in higher-level languages, such as C, Matlab, are required.
• Experience of digital image acquisition will be useful.
• Experience in high definition laser scanning will be useful.

Project Aims and Objectives

BIM models are not just 3D drawings; they offer much more. BIM allows accredited project team members to add, edit, delete and share real time information and design specification on a common technology. BIM can integrate and combine files from different design software into a single file called IFC (Industry Foundation Classes). However, a BIM readiness report indicated that 73% of built environment small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have never worked with BIM models and SMEs represents 85% of the share of employment in the construction industry private sector.

This project aims to establish an innovative image processing tool to integrate digital information obtained from a variety of digital imaging techniques, for example, 3D laser scanning, high-resolution colour imaging and spectral imaging. Advanced image processing involves management of point cloud data and spectral imaging data, their visualisation and image registration.
