About the Project

The PhD project has a strong emphasis on heat transfer and conformal cooling of casting tools, using numerical modelling and experimental testing. The project will be carried out in collaboration with two industrial partners CastAlum and Renishaw. The project is sponsored by Innovate UK https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/innovate-uk

The project aims to developing a validated mathematical model of the cooling of aluminium casting tools, to achieve optimum cooling channel layout for complex tool geometries. Heat transfer from the cast part to the coolant needs to be maximized to reduce the production cycle time, and also to have uniform cooling to achieve the required quality. In addition, the model should consider the limitations imposed by 3-D printing tool manufacturing and fatigue of thermal stresses, to increase the tool life time.

To achieve the project objectives, a generic computational thermal and optimization model will be developed. The model will be validated using a test-rig and the support provided by the industrial partners. The student will be under joint supervision by Dr Essam Abo-Serie and Dr James Jewkes.

Coventry University
Coventry University has been voted ‘Modern University of the Year’ three times running by The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide. Ranked in the UK’s top 15 (Guardian University Guide), we have a global reputation for high quality teaching and research with impact. Almost two-thirds (61%) of our research was judged ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. By joining the University’s Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing (EEC), you will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships with some of the biggest names in industry, including Jaguar Land Rover, GE Aviation, Cummins and Intel.

Candidate Specification
• Entry criteria for applicants to PHD (standard)
A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.

In the event of a first degree classification of less than 2:1, a Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at minimum merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at minimum merit level (60%).
