Synthetic Chemistry (crystal) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

We have 15 Synthetic Chemistry (crystal) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

PhD in Chemistry - Taking Crystal Sponges into the Nanoscale Using 3D Electron Diffraction

Bright, highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for a fully funded 3.5 year PhD position in the School of Chemistry, available to commence on 1st October 2024 in the Forgan research group at the University of Glasgow, which will focus on the use of electron diffraction to characterize metal-organic frameworks and probe new applications such as the nanoscale crystal sponge technique. Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Rotaxane-based Ligands.

The PhD project will focus on the preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) using rotaxane-based ligands. In particular, the project will demonstrate how rotaxane motion affects the adsorption of guest molecules in MOFs. Read more

Bioinspired Total Synthesis of Complex Natural Products

The School of Chemistry is offering a fully funded PhD studentship to a highly motivated candidate to start in September 2024. The student will carry out their doctoral research in the George Group, which has recently moved to the University of Southampton. Read more

Experimental Discovery of New Ionic Conducting Materials Towards Net-Zero Technologies

Materials that allow the rapid motion of ions are essential for the new energy technologies needed to meet the challenge of net zero, such as batteries, fuel cells and electrolysers for green hydrogen. Read more

Organometallic and Lanthanide Complexes for Upconversion Luminescence

PhD Supervisor. Richard C. Knighton. Project Overview. The aim of the project is to work on state-of-the-art heteropolymetallic architectures (organometallic transition-metal and lanthanide complexes) in the area of two-photon molecular upconversion luminescence, for application as novel bioimaging probes. Read more

Stereoselective synthesis of mechanically chiral molecules for sensing and catalysis

Background – the stereoselective synthesis of mechanically chiral molecules. The stereoselective synthesis of chiral organic molecules is one of the core challenges in synthetic organic chemistry. Read more

Mechanochemistry and the mechanical bond – sustainable methods for the synthesis of functional rotaxanes and catenanes

Background. Molecules are mechanically bonded if they are composed of two covalent subcomponents that are threaded through one another such that they can never separate even though there is no covalent bond between them. Read more

Molecular switches

Research activities in Kilian group are centred on the design and synthesis of novel organophosphorus and heavier Group 15 (As, Sb, Bi) organoelement compounds. Read more
