Molecular Biology (testing) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

We have 38 Molecular Biology (testing) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

Understanding the soil microbiome under controlled light conditions

Our research group is working within a consortium that is testing semi-transparent solar installations on crop growth-houses, to enhance biological and financial resilience in protected farming. Read more

Study of early pathological changes in calcified cartilage in osteoarthritis and alkaptonuria

We are seeking a motivated individual to work on this exciting project investigating the role that the calcified cartilage has in rare and common joint osteoarthritis, using novel approaches such as gene silencing and establishment of a 3D chondrocyte cell culture model. Read more

The impact of nutritional scavenging on host-pathogen interactions, antifungal efficacy and emergence of antifungal resistance

Infections caused by Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) cause more deaths globally than any other fungal disease. Over 20 million are affected annually with four million having life threatening invasive and chronic infections with high morbidity and mortality up to 90%. Read more

High-throughput biomaterials discovery

Polymer biomaterials have revolutionised a range of areas from drug delivery, to antimicrobials, to cellular cryopreservation. There are 1000’s of possible monomer combinations, molecular weights and architectures to be explored, and even small differences can dramatically change their properties. Read more

Manipulation of neuroimmune responses and behaviour by infectious agents

This project is available exclusively to self-funded students who wish to commence study for a PhD in the academic year 2023/24. The project focuses on how infectious agents modify the individuals that they infect and how neuroimmune responses to infection moderate behaviour changes in warm-blooded animals and humans. Read more

Novel glycoprotease discovery and characterisation for enhanced detergent performance

In this exciting joint academia-industry project the student will exploit metagenomes and the huge untapped capacity of the human gut microbiota to breakdown glycoconjugates to discover novel protease enzymes that can potentially increase the performance and environmental sustainability of leading P&G automatic dishwashing brands. NIHR Leeds BRC: An interferon diagnostic to inform early detection and prevention strategies in Ana positive CTDs

Type I interferons (IFN) play a role in a wide range of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), and strong evidence suggests that measurement of IFN activity could have clinical value, although testing has not progressed into clinical settings. Read more
