EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Civil Engineering

View All CDTs

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Civil Engineering is seeking applicants for fully funded 4-year studentships. These are available for UK and EU students and will involve training and research focussed on the delivery of sustainable civil infrastructure, including the re-appraisal and re-use of existing infrastructure and the opportunities afforded by multiple-use. Research will address the key challenges of fit for purpose, economic viability, environmental impact, resilience, infrastructure inter-dependence and durability as well as the impacts of changes in population, urbanisation, available natural resources, technology and societal expectations. This requires a broad-based approach to research training, effectively integrated across the wide range of disciplines presently within the civil engineering profession.

The CDT aims to recruit high quality, ambitious engineers. The doctoral training will combine intellectual challenge, technical content and rigour, with focused involvement in important problems presently faced by the civil engineering profession. It will produce high quality civil engineers who understand global sustainability issues, in the widest possible context, and who have the skills and vision to eventually lead major infrastructure development projects or research programmes.

The doctoral students will be based in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Imperial College London (ICL), one of the world’s leading Civil Engineering Departments.

The CDT will provide a different type of doctoral training which is based on the way leading companies address major problems. This will involve extensive collaboration with industry, supervision from leading academics and cohort based training. The CDT will provide unique opportunities to work on major Grand Challenges related to sustainable civil engineering with scope for students to help define their individual research programmes.

The UK and many other countries recognise the overwhelming importance on infrastructure development. Our aim is to recruit highly motivated graduates who have vision and drive. Candidates will also need to demonstrate enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and commitment to sustainable development.

EU students must meet the EPSRC eligibility criteria available at: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx

We are also interested in receiving applications from other EU and international students who are keen to benefit from the CDT programme.
