Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD programme in Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disease

The incidence of obesity, diabetes and related cardiovascular disorders is rising worldwide, making improved understanding of these common disorders increasingly important.

This 4-year PhD programme, aims to provide the next generation of scientists with the knowledge and skills to make real advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

Based at the world-leading Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, the Programme involves around 50 leading scientists from across Cambridge, offering training in a wide range of topics and techniques that exploit the power of modern molecular and cellular biology, and integrating these approaches with sophisticated whole animal physiology, clinical and epidemiological science. Particular areas of strength within the programme include genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, systems biology, sophisticated metabolic phenotyping, epigenetics, imaging, behavioural science, epidemiology and vascular biology. The wide range of training and researcher development activities available maximises competitiveness for future opportunities.

During the 1st year students develop first-hand research experience in a range of areas through three mini-research projects in different laboratories and attend weekly ‘hot topics’ and training courses run by research leaders.

Towards the end of the 1st year, work is submitted for an MRes degree and students make an informed choice of PhD research project for years 2-4.

Five studentships are available from October 2019, open to UK and international students.

Support includes a generous stipend starting at £19,919, research costs and fees at either home/EU or overseas rates.

Full details of the programme, including how to apply

The closing date for applications is 13th December 2018 and Interviews will be held between 21st – 23rd January 2019.
