What is the iT-CDT?
The iT-CDT has created a world-leading research environment by bringing together the University of Leeds & University of Sheffield Tribology Institutes in this joint Centre. We recruit the brightest postgraduate research engineers and scientists to work alongside our expert academic team and industrial partners, tackling the challenging problems that face industry today and developing new technologies and skills to benefit all our collaborators.
What is Tribology?
Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication and is the science behind how things move and slide over each other - car engines need advanced lubricants to save fuel and reduce emissions, wind turbines rely on healthy bearings and gearboxes, railway track wears out and fatigue cracks form, and the aging population needs prosthetic joints that will last a longer.
Tribology is a fascinating subject, so vital to the world around us, but so few people know what it is. Our expertise covers a broad portfolio of fundamental and applied research on friction, wear, lubrication, surface coatings and treatments covering a range of industrial sectors. We have projects focusing on Bioengineering, Contact Mechanics, Surface Engineering, Computational Modeling, Corrosion & Erosion, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical & Process Engineering and Sports Engineering.
How to Apply
If you want to take on a challenging project and gain essential skills & training for your future career, then please get in touch if you have or expect a 1st or 2.1 (or masters level degree with merit or above) in either engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics or other relevant disciplines.
