Wellcome Trust Four Year PhD Programme The University of Manchester Quantitative and Biophysical Biology

Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Programme
in Quantitative and Biophysical Biology

Have you trained in physics, engineering, mathematics or computer science?

Would you like to use your skills to tackle complex problems in biology?

What is the WTQBB?

The Wellcome Trust PhD Programme in Quantitative and Biophysical Biology will equip you with the skills needed to address fundamental questions that underpin human development and offer new insights into disease.

The programme is specifically designed to help theoretically trained students take the leap into biology, and especially experimental biology.

Wellcome Trust Four Year PhD Programme

The Programme

You will be trained in the major questions and experimental techniques in biology, and in the application of mathematical modelling and statistical analysis. Importantly, all PhD projects will require an integration of theory and experimentation, involving ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ work. You will be co-supervised by a wet-lab experimentalist and theoretically trained PI.

The first year consists of two short research projects and Programme-specific skills workshops centered around problem-based exploratory learning. These courses will equip you with the knowledge to choose your PhD research topic for the remaining three years, as well as the skills to carry it out.

Admissions and funding

This PhD Programme is supported by the Wellcome Trust, and each studentship provides a generous stipend (~£20,000pa), tuition fees for UK/EU applicants and £40,000 in research expenses (to the project supervisor) to cover research costs and attendance at scientific meetings.

These studentships are available to students of all nationalities, however students from outside the EU are required to pay the difference in the UK/EU and Overseas fee level, currently around £14,000 per year. We are able to offer exceptional international candidates financial support towards the cost of the additional tuition fees, therefore making a full award to cover all fees and stipend. These awards will be made on a case-by-case to our most outstanding international applicants, at the discretion of the Management Board.

We take a maximum of six students per year onto the programme, which begins at the end of September. Competition for entry to the programme is fierce, and we are looking for candidates who demonstrate academic excellence and high motivation for research.
