The Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at the University of Mannheim offers excellent opportunities for highly motivated students with a quantitative orientation to pursue their doctoral degree in Business, Economics and the Social Sciences.
Highly qualified graduates are welcome to apply for the full-time PhD Programs starting in September 2017. Up to 45 scholarships will be offered to the best applicants.
Our PhD Programs provide unique interdisciplinary training across the boundaries of the economic and the social sciences to equip graduates to be academic leaders and decision scientists of the future.
The first year of the program lays the critical foundation necessary for later work in field courses and dissertation and paves a path for the students to work in intense collaboration with our dynamic and outstanding faculties to learn the craft of research. This occurs both in theoretical projects and in empirical fields, where learning-by-doing transfers information about data sets, research strategy, and econometric tools. In the second year students attend a number of courses in their field of specialization before they start their research and writing phase.
The research results of our students and graduates are regularly published in leading journals.
Generous monthly scholarships, travel support, your own office space and IT equipment are just some of the perks you will benefit from – apart from the vibrant, international research community you will be working in. Last but not least there are no tuition fees to be paid.
We welcome applications from highly qualified students of all nationalities. Applicants must hold (or anticipate receiving before enrollment) a very good research oriented Master's degree (or an equivalent) in the respective field. Applications from students with excellent Bachelor degrees are considered as well. Applicants from neighboring fields can be admitted if their background is judged to be sufficient. Only online applications are accepted.
Applications handed in before:
will be treated as early applications and decided on before the official deadline.
