PhD Studies in the Heart of Europe

The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research (IMPRS-HLR) is the leading educational platform of the Max Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim, Germany and is jointly operated by the Justus Liebig University (Gießen) and the Goethe University (Frankfurt).

We are now inviting outstanding students to apply as PhD candidates!

Doctoral fellows will participate in a three-year professional graduate school program including seminars, methods courses and retreats and will benefit from the scientific offerings of the Max Planck Institute and the universities. An individual thesis committee will provide personal feedback, guidance and mentorship for every student. For their research project doctoral students are supplied with generous funding.

The graduate program offers studies in the field of heart, vessel and lung biology and covers cutting-edge science in:

  • Cardiac Development and Remodeling
  • Stem Cells and Tissue Regeneration
  • Pharmacology
  • Developmental Genetics
  • Lung Development and Remodeling
  • Epigenetics
  • Angiogenesis and Metabolism
  • Cell Polarity and Organogenesis
  • Bioinformatics
  • Proteomics

The international and interdisciplinary approach of the program promotes cross-frontier thinking and scientific networking, and successful candidates can choose a research project from one of the research groups. Depending on qualifications and the selected projects, doctoral students may be eligible to register for one of four doctoral degrees offered, including Ph.D., Dr. rer. nat., Dr. hum. biol., and Dr. med.

Applicants must have acquired a Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, medicine, veterinary medicine or a related discipline by October 2016.
