EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in the Science and Applications of Graphene and Related Nanomaterials (GrapheneNOWNANO)

PhD in Nanoscience

Graphene NOWNANO is a recently established Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) at the University of Manchester in partnership with Lancaster University. It builds on the two partners' world-leading expertise in the science and technology of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials to offer a broad interdisciplinary CDT. The CDT builds upon and is run jointly with our NOWNANO programme established in 2009.

Key points of the programme

  • Research in the science of graphene/2D materials and their wide-ranging applications
  • 6-month training in fundamentals of 2D materials and core research techniques, including 2 mini-projects in a choice of labs
  • Secondment opportunity in your third year to gain industry related skills
  • 3 ½ year research project in state-of-the-art interdisciplinary nanoscience laboratories
  • Choice of experimental, theoretical and computational projects. Topics include:
    • Fundamental science of graphene and other two-dimensional materials
    • Experimental and theoretical physics of nanodevices based on 2D materials;
    • 2D heterostructures: materials on demand;
    • Synthesis, fabrication, characterisation and modelling of 2D materials;
    • Applications of graphene and other 2D materials in electronics, photonics, electrochemistry, composites, spintronics, filtration and separation, drug delivery, regenerative medicine…

Who should apply?

Applications are invited for up to 12 fully-funded PhD places. We welcome applications from graduates with a good UK honours undergraduate degree (1st class or a high 2i), or a first degree with an additional masters degree or international equivalent, in science, engineering or bio-medical disciplines. Funded places are available to UK and EU nationals resident in the UK for >3 years. A small number of funded places are also available to EU nationals not currently resident in the UK. International applicants with full funding are welcome to apply. Proof of funding will be required at application stage. Applicants should be looking for a challenging, interdisciplinary research training environment.
