You may already be working professionally in the field you wish to research. You may already have extensive knowledge of your field. You may be a business professional with the basis of your research in mind, looking for a way to formalise and extend your knowledge and skills within the framework of a research degree.
The award of a UK doctorate is based solely upon individual research, presented in the form of a thesis. Doctoral study is normally available only to students holding a Masters degree in a subject area relevant to the PhD research proposal. However, Amity may consider applications from candidates with extensive relevant professional experience or non-Masters degree qualifications on a case-by-case basis.
Research degrees offer you the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your ability to undertake research into an area of personal or professional interest. For PhD the research must be original, i.e. it must make a contribution to knowledge in the field. Different routes are offered in different subjects. If you are considering a research degree now or in the future, you should contact the Admissions Office to request further information.
All lectures and seminars are held at the University of London’s Birkbeck College, on nearby Malet Street. Students have full access to the computer labs and services at Birkbeck College, with PCs, printers and scanners for their use.
The Birkbeck College Library has its own modern five-storey library, well maintained with computers and wireless internet access for personal devices. By adding credit to an account, members can also make use of photocopying facilities and printers which are both wi-fi and e-mail compatible.
Next door to Birkbeck College is the Senate House Library. With 3 million volumes over 15 floors, the library constitutes the largest part of the University of London’s Research Library Services and is one of the most respected in Britain. As well as being a valuable research facility, the library is a well- appointed quiet environment where students can go to get on with their individual studies free from distraction.
The University of Bolton Digital Library, Amity students enrolled onto the PhD programme share resources with the University of Bolton. As students in London, this includes the extensive digital library with off campus access to course relevant e-books, and online business journals.
