Prepare for a PhD with a research-intensive Masters at The University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is one of the world's top 20 universities (QS World University Rankings 2016/17) and one of the largest in the UK. It is also one of the most cosmopolitan universities, welcoming over 8,500 postgraduate taught and research students from more than 130 countries across the globe.

The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine offers six research-intensive Masters that not only give students an excellent grounding in research but provide transferable skills that will prove essential for your career in research or science. We offer four MSc by Research degrees for those with undergraduate degrees in biological, chemical or physical sciences: Biomedical Sciences, Cardiovascular Biology, Integrative Neuroscience, and Reproductive Sciences. Those with medical or veterinary degrees can apply for our MMedSci in Medical Sciences or MVetSci in Veterinary Sciences.

Your stepping stone to a PhD

All of our Masters by Research degrees give you a 12 month grounding in research, with two 20-week lab-based projects. Each programme provides you with a thorough training in a particular discipline through original investigation and experiment. Gain hands-on experience of different research groups and learn a broad range of experimental approaches. You’ll get to work in different laboratories throughout the year, helping you explore whether research in that area is a suitable career path for you. The majority of graduates continue on to a PhD, either at Edinburgh or elsewhere.
