PhD positions in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London

We are looking for research students to join us in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London. We can offer EPSRC-funded PhD studentships to suitable Home students. This covers tuition fees, and a bursary of £16,500 per year for 3.5 years. For EU and Overseas students there is a range of departmental funding available.

The Department is one of the world’s leading electrical and electronic engineering departments. In Ref 2014 we were ranked 1st for electrical and electronic engineering with 97% of our research rated as either world leading or excellent.

Our research is focussed around seven thematic areas of high performance embedded systems; biomedical; defence and security; energy systems; intelligent and autonomous systems; MEMS, sensors and devices; and big data.

Current research includes development of a bio-inspired artificial pancreas, a wireless device to monitor patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, improving imaging diagnostics to detect cancers caused by liver fluke parasites, guarding healthcare information in cyberspace, 3D hand gesture interface technology, control of two wheeled and hybrid vehicles, design and management of hvdc grids, MEMS for micro-power generation, and development of wireless power transfer.

Our research covers much more than this. We span the whole discipline from microsystems to power systems. We are looking for students in a wide range of areas.

The Department is arranged into five research groups in the areas of Circuits and Systems, Communications and Signal Processing, Control and Power, Intelligent Systems and Networks, and Optical and Semiconductor Devices. Each research group is comprised of academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and research students. Each research group has its own floor in the building with office space and research laboratories. You will be both a member of your research group and the Department’s wider community.

During your studies you will participate in our Graduate School’s Professional Skills Development programme which assists you in developing your research skills, prepares you for your career, and allows you to build links with fellow students from across the College.

To apply you would either need to hold, or be expecting to obtain, a 1st class MEng degree, or a BEng passed at 1st and a Masters passed at Merit or Distinction. The majority of our students come to us with degrees in electrical and electronic engineering; but degrees in physics, computing and mechanical engineering can also be acceptable depending on the research area.

It is expected that you would start your studies in either October 2018 or January 2019.

If you would like to be considered for funding you should make you application by 31 May 2018.
