PhD Scholarships in Next Generation Airplane Engines and Noise 2018

PhD Scholarships in Next Generation Aircraft Engine Noise 2018

The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, together with Rolls-Royce plc, invite applications for a range of new PhD Scholarships working toward the goal of reducing the noise of the next generation of airplane engines.

The ISVR, founded over fifty years ago, is internationally recognised as a world-leading research institute for its work on sound and vibration problems. It has a long history of industrial collaboration in the field of aviation noise, and it is home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Gas Turbine Noise , which provides state-of-the-art research into aero-engine noise.

The Gas Turbine Noise UTC are looking to expand their world-class research team to help meet the challenge of reducing noise. Our activities include theoretical, computational and experimental studies of aircraft noise sources, and the development of low-noise technologies and robust noise prediction tools.

A range of PhD opportunities are offered, and applications are invited from prospective candidates with an excellent degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University) in a relevant mathematics, science or engineering subject. Strong mathematical skills will be an advantage in most cases.

Fully-funded scholarships are available including paid tuition fees (UK/EU rate) and a tax-free bursary. All PhD students will be offered the opportunity to visit and/or spend some time working within the Rolls-Royce noise department.
