Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) programme

4 Year DPhil/PhD – Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership – Pirbright Studentships

Candidates are invited to apply for studentships funded by the Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) programme which support research undertaken under the joint supervision of academics at The Pirbright Institute and the University of Oxford. These studentships may be of particular interest to students with interests in areas such as virology, immunology, pathogen evolution and animal health and welfare. Examples of projects to be offered in 2018 include:

Elucidating the interplay of viruses, bacteria and mucosal immunity in the avian gut: How virus-induced immunosuppression exacerbates secondary infections at the mucosa. Dr. Andrew Broadbent, The Pirbright Institute; Prof. Adrian Smith, University of Oxford.

Investigating intra-host influenza virus diversity. Dr. Holly Shelton, The Pirbright Institute & Prof. Ervin Fodor, University of Oxford

Selection, geography and the evolution of pathogens. Dr. Luca Ferretti, The Pirbright Institute and Prof. Daniel Wilson, University of Oxford

Genetic control of pest insects. Prof. Luke Alphey, The Pirbright Institute and Prof. Michael Bonsall, University of Oxford

Students also undertake a 12-week professional internship to gain direct experience of the areas of work

Candidates for Pirbright studentships should apply directly to the Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP and state in their application that they wish to be considered for a Pirbright studentship. Their personal statement should include an explanation of their interest in working at The Pirbright Institute. Students who are awarded Pirbright studentships will have the opportunity to participate fully in the 4-year training programme provided by the DTP, and will have the opportunity to undertake exploratory projects in two research groups before committing to a specific 3-year research project, which will be undertaken under the joint supervision of researchers at The Pirbright Institute and the University of Oxford or Oxford Brookes University.

About the Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP

The Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP is supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and aims to equip a new generation of researchers with the skills, insight and knowledge needed to tackle the most important challenges in bioscience research.

Led by the University of Oxford, the Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP brings together the expertise and facilities of seven world-class research institutions. These include: The Pirbright Institute, Oxford Brookes University, Diamond Light Source, ISIS, STFC Central Laser Facility and the Research Complex at Harwell.

We provide an innovative, individually-tailored graduate training programme that includes taught courses in interdisciplinary skills and the opportunity for students to undertake two exploratory research projects with prospective supervisors before selecting their main research project. Students also undertake a 12-week professional internship or placement to gain direct experience of the areas of work into which they can apply their skills.

We welcome applications from students who hold, or are on target to achieve a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualifications), as a minimum, in a relevant academic subject. Up to 38 studentships are available for UK and EU students for the forthcoming academic year supported by the BBSRC and the partnership (BBSRC eligibility criteria apply).

Full details of the programmes and information on how to apply can be found at www.biodtp.ox.ac.uk or by e-mailing dtpenquiries@biodtp.ox.ac.uk
