The Opportunity
Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding candidates to study for a PhD in the Injury Prevention Graduate Research Industry Program (IP-GRIP). There are 16 PhD interdisciplinary projects available that have been identified by industry partners and which will be supervised by experts from the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Science, and Monash Art, Design and Architecture.
The overarching goal of the IP-GRIP is simple: to teach PhD students excellent research skills to conduct innovative and interdisciplinary research that can underpin and injury free transport system, workplace and community.
The global burden of injury is vast. Injuries continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, contributing to more than five million deaths each year and tens of millions of people experiencing ongoing disability as a result of injuries (WHO, 2016). Injury therefore has been identified as a major public health problem in Australia and internationally.
As a result of a shift in understanding that injuries are largely preventable events and recognition of the significant health and financial implications to the community, injury prevention research and policy is now clearly placed in the public health arena. More importantly, the growing acceptance of injuries as a preventable public health problem has identified an urgent need for highly trained injury prevention researchers to assist in providing the evidence-base on which effective public policy and programs can be delivered. PhD students within the IP-GRIP will be trained to meet this urgent need.
Candidate Requirements
Successful candidates will:
- have an Honours or Masters degree with H1 or equivalent;
- meet the eligibility criteria for PhD candidature at Monash University;
- have an interest in injury prevention research;
- have excellent written and verbal communication;
- have the ability to plan, organise, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, and
- have analytical thinking, data analysis and critical problem-solving skills.

Note: Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
