University of Dundee MRC Doctoral Training Programme in Quantitative and Interdisciplinary approaches to Biomedical Science (QIBIOMED)

2021 ENTRY - One place has recently become available on our MRC QIBIOMED programme, we seek an enthusiastic and dedicated graduate in any life sciences or biomedical subject, computing, mathematics, chemistry and physics to join our 2021 cohort.

We offer students a choice of well-supervised, high quality quantitative and interdisciplinary projects at the forefront of international biomedical science. The research programme involves staff in the School of Life Sciences, School of Medicine and the School of Science and Engineering. The outstanding biomedical research at the University of Dundee was recognised by its very high rankings in REF 2014, with Dundee rated as the top University for Biological Sciences in the UK.

Most students carry out three rotation projects in the first year to experience distinct areas of research and provide experience of complimentary experimental techniques that enable new interdisciplinary approaches to be taken; informed by these rotations they choose the project and lab for their PhD.

A diverse range of projects, involving, for example computational biology, mathematical modelling, cell and molecular biology, biological chemistry and pharmacology fall under four themes -

  1. Development, Stem Cells and Neurobiology
  2. Infection and Disease
  3. Responses to Cellular Stress
  4. Big Data and Translation

  • Additional structured training and mentoring covering computational biology, mathematical biology and statistics.
  • Competitive stipend of £16,000 per annum, tuition fees, laptop, contribution to travel and conference costs.

Professional development is an integral part of the programme and is supported through generic skills workshops designed to equip postgraduates with key professional scientific skills. Our students also have access to optional additional training such as “Personal Effectiveness and Career Development”, “Finance, Business and Marketing” and “Project Management and Statistics” through Organisation and Professional Development (OPD) Dundee. The depth and breadth of this programme allows the participant to tailor the training to their own specific requirements.

EU and International applicants – please ensure you check the necessary Home Office (UKVI) requirements for studying in the UK, including associated costs, further information can be found here - www.gov.uk/study-uk-student-visa

Students from the EU may be eligible for Home fees if they have pre-settled or settled status, please check UKRI residency requirements here. If you are awarded a studentship and you have told us you have pre-settled/settled status and then cannot provide documentation to prove your status, your studentship may be withdrawn.

We particularly encourage students from groups that are currently underrepresented in postgraduate science research, including black and minority ethnic (BME) students and those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We offer enhanced support to individuals with primary care responsibilities or disabilities and are committed to being part of an evolving community of practitioners who will develop and share practice to bring science and culture together, placing both firmly at the heart of what we do.
