  Department of Geography

 Funded PhD Programme (Students Worldwide)

About the Programme

Department of Geography

With an international reputation for research excellence, the department offers exciting opportunities to conduct research that has a real global impact. The department offers two approaches to completing a PhD; there is the opportunity to take part in research projects currently being undertaken by our academic staff, or it is possible to propose your own research project based upon the topics available for supervision within the Department.

Physical geography in the department focuses primarily on: climate and cryoshpere, ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemistry, environmental reconstruction and observation. Human geography in the department focusses mainly on: International development, policy governance and place, social and cultural geographies, social spatial inequalities, as well as society and environment.

There is a large vibrant community within the department, with excellent opportunities to share and present research to peers and the wider academic community. On top of this the research students and academics in the department share a good collaborative atmosphere, with support and supervision in the department being of the highest standard.

The department is very successful in securing funding for PhD scholarships, with a mixture of funding sources available including fully funded research projects; these are competitive and subject to availability.

For further information please visit our website.

We are particularly keen to supervise PhD topics which align with our research priorities - details of potential projects are provided below. We encourage you to treat these projects as starting points for a conversation with us.

If you find a project or area of research which excites you then we invite you to contact the proposed supervisor.
