 Funded PhD Programme (Students Worldwide)

About the Programme

The Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield is offering two funded PhD studentships in digital media and society. Studentships run for 3.5 years and commence in September 2020, and can be on any topic in the field of digital media and society. Students will be supervised by at least one member of the digital media and society teaching team, listed below. All supervision for successful candidates will take place within the Department of Sociological Studies.

The successful applicants will be expected to provide up to 180 hours of teaching support per academic year, which will include leading seminars, dissertation supervision and contributing to marking on two of the four core modules on the MA Digital Media and Society:

  • Perspectives on Digital Society;
  • Researching Digital Society;
  • Digital Methods;
  • Social Media, Data and Society.

Payment for teaching support will be made in addition to bursary and fees, at Grade 7.1, the rate set by the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) scheme.

Application procedure
Candidates will have an undergraduate and taught postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline. They will have been offered a PhD place within the Department of Sociological Studies before the studentship application deadline, and are advised to obtain this offer at the earliest opportunity. Information about applying for a PhD can be found here.

Applicants to these studentships should submit the following information to Jenni Adams, Postgraduate Research Support Officer, (j.adams@sheffield.ac.uk) by 1 May 2020:

Part 1:
Using no more than 250 words, please state why your skills, experience and plans for further research or study make you a particularly suitable candidate for an award.

Part 2:
Using no more than 800 words please summarise your proposed research topic.
Please give a description of your proposed research topic including the questions or hypotheses to be addressed; the methods to be used; the sources to be consulted; a brief timetable covering the period of study; how you expect the research to be useful and to whom. You should also indicate any fieldwork or language training plans how these fit into the timetable of study.

Part 3:
Using no more than 300 words, submit a teaching statement in which you identify the MA Digital Media and Society core modules that you would feel confident to support (leading seminars or workshops and marking). Describe how you would approach teaching, decide teaching and learning methods, and interact with students in seminars, workshops and tutorials. A statement of teaching and learning expectations and ethos is welcome.
