Four Year PhD Programme at the MRC Harwell Institute, Oxfordshire

In conjunction with Oxford University
Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and Department of Biochemistry

The MRC Harwell Institute are offering two PhD studentships, starting in October 2019, to study human disease using mouse genetics and mouse functional genomics. We have a variety of research areas from which the successful applicants can select to undertake their PhD studies. The programme begins with a three-month induction, consisting of general training, followed by rotations in two laboratories of the student’s choice. After induction, students then choose the laboratory and research topic for their PhD.

Four Year PhD Programme at the MRC Harwell Institute, Oxfordshire In conjunction with Oxford University

The MRC Harwell Institute is an international centre for mouse genetics at the forefront of studies in mouse functional genomics and mouse models of human disease. We are engaged in lifetime studies, from developmental abnormalities through to diseases of ageing. The projects available incorporate a whole range of skills from genome editing, phenotyping, anatomy, histopathology, imaging, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, molecular biology, cell biology and cell culture.

The research themes offering PhD projects at the MRC Harwell Institute for 2019 are:

  • Genetic basis of type 2 diabetes
  • Genetics of circadian rhythms and sleep in health and disease
  • Molecular genetics of sensorineural hearing loss
  • Mouse models of otitis media and otopathogen infection
  • The role of cilia in development and disease
  • Disorders of sex development
  • Bioinformatics of mouse models of disease
  • Investigating novel stress response pathways in neurological disease
  • Novel and bespoke mouse models for dissecting neurodegenerative disease

MRC Harwell Institute students are registered with and are awarded their DPhil from the University of Oxford. As such, the students are also affiliated to a University of Oxford department, either the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics or Department of Biochemistry. They also join one of the University of Oxford Colleges. Moreover, as well as benefiting from the training provided at MRC Harwell, they are also eligible to take advantage of the training courses and career support offered at the University of Oxford. The studentships include an annual stipend of £15,240 and cover university fees for students meeting the UK residence requirements detailed on our website. Currently we have 27 doctoral training students. Together with the postdoctoral fellows and other members of the Institute, our students contribute to a vibrant atmosphere providing a supportive environment for the development of future leaders in mouse genetics and the life sciences.
