Central to this is our large body of postgraduate research students of over 2000 across our departments and more than 240 in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The Faculty is recognised for our world class research, our diverse range of research centres and our highly employable postgraduates. We explore, share and recreate expressions of the human experience and are known for our interdisciplinary and diverse approaches, our extensive public engagement and collaborative work, and our innovations in the digital humanities.
Our track record for research excellence attracts students from across the world to pursue original research and contribute to the advancement of our knowledge and understanding of the world, its past and present, and its many and varied cultures.
The School of English
Ranked 12th in the Times/ Sunday Times University Guide 2014, the School of English offers excellent supervision for postgraduate research in an array of subjects in English Literature, English Language and Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Literary-Linguistics, and Theatre and Performance.
The School has over fifty staff, each of them internationally renowned in their field of expertise and with many years of experience in research supervision. Our cutting-edge research interests extend from avant garde poetry to language learning, from twelfth-century manuscripts to site-specific performance. We are actively engaged in interdisciplinary centres and networks which extend well beyond the School of English.
Our lively postgraduate community has access to dedicated study space and top-class facilities including an exhibition area and a professionally equipped studio space.
We currently have around 100 students studying for research degrees with us and we are proud of our dynamic and open research culture. Our postgraduates are encouraged to take part in the many reading groups, research seminars and academic conferences which we host each year. The School of English delivers a range of activities that spans teaching, research and public engagement. These, together with our extensive programme of events, add an extra, vibrant dimension to life in the School.
The Department has a variety of sources of postgraduate funding available including fully funded PhD scholarships.
