The Department of History.
The Department is a leading centre for historical research, in the top 100 in the QR World Rankings of places to study History, and ranked joint-second across the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
Home to a wide range of research projects and a vibrant community of postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers the Department offers opportunities to work with leading researchers with specialisms in the history of many geographical areas and extending chronologically from late antiquity to contemporary history. Close relationships with other departments in the Faculty and active collaborations with other parts of the university, including the Medical School, encourage an openness to comparative and interdisciplinary approaches.
We offer supervision in late antique and medieval history; early modern; eighteenth-century studies; modern Britain and Europe; the history of America and the United States; history of the British Empire; the modern Middle East; and modern India. Historians at Sheffield have been pioneers in the development of digital humanities with projects such as the Old Bailey Online and Digital Panopticon.
Research clusters include themes of Law and Society; Cultures of Communication; Democracy and Civil Society; War and Peace; and Religion, Ideology and Belief. Sheffield historians are active in a number of interdisciplinary centres, including Medical Humanities, the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, SCEMS (Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies), and Cultures of the Cold War.
Based in the purpose-built Jessop West building, the Department has dedicated study spaces available for postgraduate students. PhD students participate in a lively and supportive research culture, with an active postgraduate forum and workshops and seminars that are student-led. The postgraduate showcase day and the annual student-run colloquium help to develop presentational skills, and there are opportunities to be involved in running the Faculty's peer-reviewed journal Track Changes, and to write on the Department's blog, History Matters.
The Doctoral Development Programme supports students to develop their research skills and to prepare for their future careers beyond the PhD. Postgraduate researchers benefit from the training opportunities and professional experience available through the Doctoral Training Centres in both Arts and Humanities and the Social Sciences. There is training available in public engagement, and we have an excellent track record in this area, working with a variety of partners, locally, regionally and nationally.
Funding Opportunities
The Department has access to a variety of sources of postgraduate funding, including the Wolfson Foundation, AHRC studentships within the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities, ESRC studentships through the White Rose Doctoral Training College, and funding competitions within the University and Faculty. There is also a strong track record of project funding for PhD studentships.
