About the Programme

The School is in the top 100 of the QS World University World Rankings and is at the forefront of national and international research in modern languages across a range of disciplines and periods, historical and contemporary. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 70% of our research was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.

There are 37 academic staff specialising in nine languages and in areas including language, literature and linguistics, culture, communication, pedagogy, technology, translation, gender and visual studies. Recent work has included many prestigious national and international projects through collaborative and individual research.

The School hosts a number of discipline specific and interdisciplinary Faculty and University-wide Research Centres encompassing a wide range of specialisms.

Our thriving and dynamic community of more than 50 postgraduate researchers participate in research seminars, research groups and an annual postgraduate conference .The School also has a vibrant programme of public engagement activities.

Russian and Slavonic Studies
Our areas of special expertise include: critical theory and the history of ideas, through the Bakhtin Centre; literary and film studies; history of art, visual culture and the aesthetics of everyday life in twentieth century Russia; and the linguistics of Slavonic languages.

Germanic Studies
Our research areas cover the range of Germanic languages, literature and society from the Middle Ages to the modern period with our main focus on modern literary and cultural studies, contemporary politics and modern history, and Germanic linguistics. 

We also conduct research in Dutch and Luxembourgish,house the internationally unique Centre for Luxembourg Studies, the Centre for Ernst Bloch Studies and the University's interdisciplinary Research Centres in Nineteenth-Century Studies, Gender Studies in Europe, and Dutch Studies.

French Studies 
Our academic staff can offer MPhil/PhD supervision on a wide variety of topics. Our areas of research expertise include French Literature and literary theory from the Middle Ages onwards, Feminism and Gender Studies, Film studies, cultural history, theory and the history of ideas, twentieth century theatre and puppetry. We also offer specialist supervision in sociology and gender studies, postcolonial studies, popular culture, poetry and music. We encourage cross-disciplinary projects and have a track-record in interdisciplinary research and supervision.

Hispanic Studies
We offer supervision on aspects of the history, literature, culture and politics of the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds on topics including Spanish and Latin American literature, visual culture, Spanish linguistics and the Mexican drug wars.

Applied Languages
We offer supervision in a range of applied language fields with a focus on language, culture, communication, translation, screen translation, and multilingual information management. We have a growing community of dedicated PhD students working on a range of topics across these areas.
