We supervise students in both theory and practice-led research.
Art & Design research at the Wolverhampton School of Art, which was founded in 1851, takes place in the CADRE research centre (Centre for Art, Design, Research and Experimentation). Established in 2006, CADRE's overarching concern lies in the effect of art and design upon society. We have supervisory capacity in the following areas:
Art, Philosophy and Social Practice - led by Professor John Roberts
- Social and Political Theory - critique of post-colonialism; diaspora politics; race, caste and class; theories of violence; post-60s critiques of mass culture.
- Cultural Theory - post-60s radical film; music and machine aesthetics (post-rock and noise music); cultural politics of voodoo and folklore; theories of the spectacle and simulacrum.
- Philosophy - Politics and phenomenology of sleep; theories of realism; dialectics and negation; philosophy of art.
- Art theory and practice - art and social engagement (relational, post-relational, communal and participatory practices); post-conceptualism; Deleuze and painting; the historic and contemporary avant-garde; photography and digitalization; curating as social practice.

Material and Theoretical Practice - led by Professor Fiona Hackney
- Cross-disciplinary Hybrid Practices - fashion and textiles; enhancing sustainability and wellbeing; the development of craft practices in relation to contemporary digital developments and their reception by and impact on communities.
- The Politics of Ornament and Erosion - methodological and conceptual approaches of marginality; notions of negation and failure in artistic practice through the subversive potential of feminine and ornament; the alienation of the mundane object; material explorations of erosion, experiences of loss, and the obsolete.

If accepted, you will receive a conditional offer with a request to submit a research proposal and attend an interview to expand on your proposal. Start dates are available on the first of each month.

Topic areas include: arts education, art as research in learning and teaching, pedagogy and andragogy, applied arts and health/community learning, drama and theatre education, music education and applied arts research. International Scholarship
We are pleased to announce a new scholarship to support international students.The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship will be available to new overseas students starting on a full-time undergraduate or PhD course from September 2019.
