The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures draws together a unique set of research and teaching expertise found across five departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences:
• Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology
• History
• Irish Studies
• Languages, Cultures and Film
• Politics
Research in the School is rich and diverse, ranging from those studying the rhetoric of Donald Trump all the way to those who write about the design of ancient Roman drainage systems. The quality of this research was confirmed by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which rated over two-thirds of the research produced by our staff as world leading or internationally excellent. Our position in the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers excellent opportunities for multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects. If you wish to study between two disciplines, we are often able to provide supervisors in both of your areas of research.
We invite applications to join our team of over 180 postgraduate research students from candidates who have, or expect to graduate with, a good Masters level qualifications to undertake doctoral studies at the University.
We particularly welcome applications in:
• Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology: areas of research expertise include Archaeology of Human Origins, Old World Prehistory, Egyptology, Archaeology of the Mediterranean and the Near East, Later European Prehistory, Archaeological Sciences (Bioarchaeology, Environmental Archaeology, Archaeomaterials), Historical Archaeology, Ancient Languages (Egyptian, Greek, Latin, Akkadian, Sumerian), and Greek and Roman History and Culture.
• History: areas of research expertise include Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Cultural and Social History, Transnational History, Reading, Texts and Archives, History of Science/Medical Humanities, Oral History, the History of the Body, Animal History and Material Culture.
• Irish Studies: areas of research expertise include literature, history, politics, conflict and migration, with a chronological span from the early middle ages to the present day .
• Languages, Cultures and Film: areas of research expertise include (for all chronological periods) Hispanic, Lusophone and Francophone cultures and societies; migrant and transnational cultures in Europe; multilingualism; sociolinguistics; world cinema; the cultural impacts of European expansion and colonialism; global Black Studies; and the processes of translation and transculturation implicit in all those encounters.
• Politics: areas of research expertise include American Politics, British Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Policy Learning and Transfer, Knowledge Updating, Political Theory, Political Communication, Populism, Middle Eastern Studies, Race, Mental Health, Terrorism, Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Parliamentary Studies, Slavery, Voting Behaviour, Decolonisation and Local Government.

Our postgraduate researchers are an integral part of our thriving academic community and Doctoral College and benefit from our strong campus based resources, including our library collections and archives, a dedicated Garstang Museum and several research laboratories. PGRs are also integrated into our network of multidisciplinary Research Centres, Groups and Clusters. Further enhancing our students’ experience are our strong links with universities and research institutes across Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. We encourage all our research students to participate in local, national and international conferences, seminars and other research activities.
In addition, the School engages and collaborates with cultural institutions locally (such as, Tate Liverpool, FACT, International Slavery Museum, National Museums Liverpool), nationally (including British Library, V&A Museum, BBC) and internationally.
All our Postgraduate Researchers have access to a wide range of opportunities for training. Skills and methods training is provided by the Liverpool Doctoral College, the Library’s KnowHow Scheme, and through programmes run by engage@liverpool and MethodsNorthWest. Training in teaching is also available to all our PhD students. Postgraduate Researchers are assisted in identifying available opportunities, both internal and external, through the Faculty PGR Training Catalogue.
Our research receives major funding support from prestigious bodies such as the European Union, Economic and Social Research Council, The British Academy, Arts and Humanities Research Council, The Leverhulme Trust, English Heritage, National Geographic.
