For this partially-funded studentship, the School is seeking one student who is interested in undertaking research in one of the following six thematic areas.
1. Organisational level impact of Leadership Development
This project will be used to extend the ‘Design for Impact' toolbox currently being developed in the school as an output of a previous doctoral project. The student will be situated in the Development and Learning Group.
2. Impact of the changing world of work on people management
Proposals are sought under this broad topic, and might include examination of how technological advancement, changing demographics or globalisation are affecting the requirements for people management. Any proposals that fit within this scope will be considered. The student will be situated in the Changing World of Work Group.
3. Alternatives to Strategy in Complex and Dynamic Contexts
This PhD project will investigate approaches to pursuing organizational success where its causes are untraceable, the future is unknowable, and organizational control is prohibitively difficult. We expect that this work will draw on the complex adaptive systems literature and focus on the notions of interaction, process, emergence, non-linearity, causal ambiguity, and self-organization. The best applications will demonstrate a good grasp of the relevant recent debates in the areas of Strategic Management, Organizational Change, or Complex Adaptive Systems and be able to articulate the value of the proposal for both scholarship and practice. The student will be situated in the Strategy group.
4. Strategy Formulation in Entrepreneurial Contexts
This PhD project will focus on investigating strategy in the entrepreneurial context where entrepreneurial context refers to the nascent enterprises. These enterprises are challenged on several dimensions which affect their chances of survival, and hence they are fundamentally different compared to established firms. While established firms are not constrained by their resources and may also have well-developed market acceptance for their products and services, nascent enterprises operate in a highly ambiguous context with no defined market and unclear product/idea. Though this project has no preference for any particular methodology, the applicants are expected to draw on Strategic Management literature with a specific focus on entrepreneurship as a unit of analysis. The best applications will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of relevant recent debates and a clear contribution to scholarship and practice. The student will be situated in the Strategy group.
5. Supply Chain 4.0
Proposals are sought under this broad topic. These might include, how Industry 4.0 innovations such as Internet of Things, advanced robotics, analytics and big data will impact on the operation of supply chains into the future or specific applications of these innovations in a supply chain context. Any proposals that fit within this scope will be considered. The student will be situated in the Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management Group
6. Corporate finance, investments and risk management
Proposals are sought for any research under this broad topic. The student will be situated within the Finance and Accounting Group.
