Institute for Digital Technologies Research

Everything we do as humans in the 21st Century, from relaxing to socialising and from working to travelling, requires a relationship with digital technology. The Institute for Digital Technologies offers excellence in research and postgraduate teaching across all major areas of digital technologies, including interactive 3D media, advanced 5G systems, big multi-media data, smart living and cybersecurity.

The Institute for Digital Technologies provides exciting cutting-edge research opportunities for postgraduate students.

“As part of an established research-led university, Loughborough University London places significant emphasis on developing a pioneering research portfolio realised through its very unique and exciting six highly specialised institutes.”

Professor Ahmet Kondoz, Associate Dean for Research

Research has the ability to provide individuals, businesses and organisations with the right resources to transform an idea into a reality. What's more, any product that exists in a rapidly changing world requires research to continue and develop its success.

Research at Loughborough University London

Loughborough University London continues Loughborough's success as one of the country's top research-led universities; bringing benefit to local and international communities through applied research and sociocultural, interdisciplinary thinking.

Students who choose to undertake a research programme with us will have the opportunity to work with top researchers and industry leaders, and gain first-hand experience of industry centred problem solving. Presentation of research findings at key national and international conferences will be an important part of your training. You will be actively encouraged to engage with research communities across the globe and you will become part of a talented research community within the University.

Institute for Digital Technologies Research

Our PhD students are linked to major companies, have access to extensive research and computing facilities, and participate in large scale international collaborative projects, providing them with exceptional postgraduate research experience.

Students who choose an MRes in Digital Technologies will receive guidance from academics leading research in the fields of internet and multimedia technology. Academics will share their expertise on Internet and Communication Networks and Fundamentals of Multimedia Signals, to enable students to gain specialised knowledge of these fields.

Research areas:

  • Interactive Media Systems
Interactive multimedia is in the heart of many applications from non-linear TV, online services, gaming, telecommunication, to simulations, education, manufacturing, and healthcare. Future multimedia applications will heavily rely on advanced content processing and networking solutions. Interactive media systems integrate various digital media components including audio and video into a structured immersive digital environment, with multimodal interfaces allowing users to interact effectively.
  • Networks, Internet of Things, and Cyber Security
The key enabling 5G technologies offer new opportunities for unifying heterogeneous networks and integrating the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • Smart Systems
The Smart Systems theme encompasses the intelligent control of soft and physical systems by way of sensing, perceiving, predicting future events and reacting on the sensed data.
