Applications are invited for a funded PhD at the School of Psychology, University College Dublin investigating joint Psychological / Operational innovations in the Irish Prison Service.
Area of Study: Candidates are invited to apply for a 4 year funded PhD position at the School of Psychology, University College Dublin. The successful candidate will develop a series of related studies within their PhD that will make an original contribution to knowledge regarding innovative management approaches to people in custody, and innovative support structures for staff within the Irish Prison Service (IPS), with particular reference to a proposed new Violent and Disruptive Prisoner Unit. Psychology and Operational Services within the IPS will jointly manage this new Unit. The successful candidate will adopted a mixed-method approach. A systematic review of the relevant psychological and operational literature related to the proposed new Unit will be required. A qualitative study will review the experience of the new Unit from a staff and prisoner perspective before and after the new Unit is implemented. A quantitative study will include pre and post measures for both staff and those on the Unit. Ongoing research will inform any necessary adjustments to be made during the Units embryonic phase. The research will leave the Unit with a structured approach to auditing and evaluation on an ongoing and longer-term basis, and guide and inform further developments within the IPS. The successful candidate will also complete a recidivism study investigating the impact of other IPS intervention initiatives. The PhD will be supervised by Prof. Gary O' Reilly (UCD School of Psychology). The position is likely to be of interest to students interested in further developing their academic skills with a view to a career in Forensic or Clinical Psychology.
Funding: The position is fully funded by the Irish Prison Service for 4 years to cover PhD fees (EU rate) at the School of Psychology, University College Dublin and a student stipend of €18,000 per year.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an honours degree in psychology or an honours diploma in psychology making them eligible for graduate membership of The Psychological Society of Ireland or the British Psychological Society.
