About the Programme

Profile Description
The University of Chester welcomes PhD students across a range of areas in the Arts.

The Department of Art and Design offers programmes in Fine Art, Photography and Design, and provides a supportive environment for MRes, MPhil and PhD students. Research degrees can be pursued through text-based studies or a combination of studio-based activity supported by a critical commentary.

The Department of Performing Arts offers students the opportunity to work alongside well-practiced and experienced researchers. It is particularly strong in interdisciplinary performance, new technologies and performance, applied drama and musicology, while maintaining a strong interest in more traditional areas of research – text-based work, performance theory, contemporary choreography and musical composition.

Research
Both departments had attracted external funding and had strong REF 2014 submissions. 47% of the Department of Art and Design submission achieved 4* and 3* recognition. Similarly, a significant proportion of the Performing Arts' outputs were judged to be internationally excellent or world leading in terms of originality and significance.

A key aspect of both teaching and research at Chester is the notion of inter-disciplinarity.
Interdisciplinary areas of research interest in the Department of Art and Design include:
• The legacies of modernism
• The role of materiality and embodiment in thinking, making and knowing
• Time, place, and cultural memory
• Participatory practice
• Communication, cultural awareness and identity within digital environments
• Textile practice and critical discourses and processes within contemporary visual culture
• Visual narrative and drawing, particularly in the context of the Centre for Narrative Drawing (http://www.chester.ac.uk/art-design/cnd).
The Department would also be keen to hear from students who wish to pursue their research across a broad spectrum of fine art, photography and design.

The Department of Performing Arts welcomes PhD enquires in the following areas:
• Contemporary British drama
• Theories of acting
• Theatre and nation
• Relationships between live and mediated performance
• Intercultural performance
• Applied practice
• Educational drama
• Musicology
• Popular Music Studies
• Composition

The PhD Programme

Research students also have access to specialist performance and workshop spaces, equipment in support of analogue and contemporary work processes, and ICT facilities for research.
