About the Programme

The School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) at the University of Kent has a reputation for delivering internationally acclaimed research. The School's vibrant culture and multidisciplinary nature attracts students and academic staff from all over the world creating a rich and unique environment in which to pursue your postgraduate career.

We provide MPhil and PhD Social Work opportunities at our Medway campus where the learning community includes service users and carers giving you unique access to a range of perspectives and primary research sources. Over a number of years we have developed close, collaborative links employers such as Kent County Council, Medway Council and Avante Care, who not only provide student practice learning opportunities for our undergraduate and postgraduate taught degrees, but who are also engaged in joint research projects with us.

Research excellence

The Social Work team has a range of experience, much of it practice-based, and connections to relevant professional bodies and organisations. The teams' collective research interests range across topics such as child protection, mental health, aging and care in later life, communication skills, youth offending, education and service development.

Watch Alisoun Milne, Professor of Social Gerontology and Social Work and Lecturer in Social Work, Dr Johanna Woodcock Ross discuss current research projects. As a student based in SSPSSR, you also benefit from access to our specialist research centres including:

  • Centre for Child Protection
  • Centre for Health Services Studies
  • Personal Social Services Research Unit
  • Tizard Centre

Research programmes

Our research programmes combine formal research skills training and individual supervision. We ensure regular interaction between you and your supervisor as well as additional opportunities for networking and interaction with the wider academic team and your peers. This is through events such as postgraduate research seminars held weekly during term time at both our Medway and Canterbury campuses. The seminars are followed by a social event – and for those unable to attend in person the seminars are also webcast for remote access.

Funding Notes

The University has a generous scholarship fund to support our research students with their tuition fees and living costs. To view all University and external funds that may be available please visit the postgraduate scholarships and funding pages.
