About the Programme

If you are interested in doctoral study in Media within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wolverhampton we would love to hear from you.

We supervise students in both theory and practice-led research.

The Centre for Film, Media, Discourse and Culture (FMDC) has an extensive supervisory capacity, with specialisms in: discourse and culture; film, television and radicalisation; critical theory; religion and culture; media, politics and communications; gaming; multiplatform journalism, television studies, internet studies, media sociology, digital sociology digital culture, broadcast journalism, health communication, media and democracy, social media; digital media and narrative, discourse and society.

Affiliated to FMDC, the Digital Theory, Technology and Practice Group (DTTP) focuses on moving image and digital technology; investigating the complexities of the move from analogue to digital technology. DTTP brings together practitioners and theorists who experiment with the technological and performative potential of the moving image. The group's research includes Animated-Documentary, Experimental Filmmaking and Performance, Fine-Art Video Installation, Digital Art, and The Virtual. DTTP is led by Dr Adam Kossoff, Reader in the Moving Image.

To enquire about a possible PhD project, please complete a PhD Initial Enquiry Form. Alternatively, you can submit a full Expression of Interest directly via our Making Your Application page. If accepted, you will receive a conditional offer with a request to submit a research proposal and attend an interview to expand on your proposal. Start dates are available on the first of each month.

International Scholarship

We are pleased to announce a new scholarship to support international students.The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship will be available to new overseas students starting on a full-time undergraduate or PhD course from September 2019. Eligible international students who are coming to study at the University's UK campuses will be awarded £1,000 in their first year. More details and terms and conditions >>

If you have the correct qualifications and access to your own funding, either from your home country or your own finances, your application will be considered.

The University offers a generous 20% Loyalty Discount to students progressing from an undergraduate programme or taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research course.
