Each year, Geography and Environmental Sciences advertises specific topics and projects for which prospective students may apply (see the link below). Alternatively, some students may wish to submit an application with a topic and project design of their choice. The Economy, Society and Governance Research Group would especially welcome applications in human geography on topics that are relevant to the interests of staff in economic, social and political geographies, see:
http://www.southampton.ac.uk/geography/research/groups/economy_society.page?
Please follow the application guidance as per the advertised topics and projects, but in addition you will be required to submit a Research Proposal. There is no official format, but we suggest a minimum of 1000 words and coverage of the following items: the research problem, the context that makes the research problem important and relevant, the aims and objectives, potential research questions, and likely research methods.
Candidates must have or expect to gain a first or strong upper second class degree, in an appropriate discipline, not necessarily Geography.
Apply online via: www.southampton.ac.uk/geography/postgraduate/research_degrees/apply.page?
When selecting your programme, please select, ‘research', ‘full time (or part time depending on your preference)', Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences', then click ‘search for programme'. You will then see ‘PhD (or MPhil) Geography' and click ‘apply online'. You will have the opportunity to type in the title of the topic and supervisor at a later stage in the application.
