Areas of expertise
We have a major commitment to research, recognising its significance in underpinning course provision, particularly at postgraduate level, and in developing knowledge transfer with industry and the public sector. Our PhD programme in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences is attached to LSBU's Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR), which is made up of four distinct research centres:

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, ISSR researchers gained recognition for their world leading and/or international excellence in social policy; culture, communication and media; and psychology. LSBU's Social Policy research is ranked top of the post-92 instituions in the UK according to the RAE. PhD studentship
The Institute of Social Science Research is offering a PhD Studentship commencing in October 2011. Applicants should normally possess a 1st or 2.1 degree in an appropriate subject. Awards are offered for three years and cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a maintenance grant of £15,590 (including London Weighting).
Studentships are available in the following research groups:
- Families Group: sexual identities; migrant identities; labour market transitions
- Development Studies: urban policy; poverty reduction; microfinance; post-disaster reconstruction and disaster risk reduction; refugee studies and human rights
- Psychology: addiction, developmental disorders; investigative forensic psychology; sexualities and group processes
- Criminology: gender; crime and justice; policing; illegal drugs; green criminology
- Culture, Arts and Media: Digital media, arts and culture; media and politics; music cultures; cultural memory
- Education: mathematics education; citizenship, democracy and sustainable development education; race and diversity in education

Research environment
The Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences' Graduate School provides a focal point for the management and support of our PhD and Professional Doctorate programmes. Research students who study at LSBU become a vital part of our dynamic research culture and are one of the essential elements which make London South Bank University (LSBU) an exciting intellectual environment.Our PhD programme also has recognition from ESRC +3 for PhDs in the areas of Sociology and Social Policy. Completion rates for our PhD students were noted as excellent in the 2008 RAE.
Programme structure and affiliations: the New London Graduate School
All Doctoral students are attached to one of the four research centres for supervision and seminars. In addition, they take part in shared formal training from a range of MSc courses, as well as in specialist programme events and activities, which provide further training and ensure an inclusive and thriving research culture. www.lsbu.ac.uk/ahs/research/graduateschool
Beginning in 2010/2011, all students on the programme will also be affiliated with the New London Graduate School (NLGS). The NLGS has been founded by a consortium of five modern universities in London (London South Bank University, University of Greenwich, University of East London, Middlesex University and London Metropolitan University) to provide the benefits of a larger community of PhD students.
