About the Programme

Areas of expertise

We have a major commitment to research, recognising its significance in underpinning course provision, particularly at postgraduate level, and in developing knowledge transfer with industry and the public sector. Our PhD programme in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences is attached to LSBU's Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR), which is made up of four distinct research centres:

  • Centre for Research in Education www.lsbu.ac.uk/cre
  • Centre for Research in Media and Culture www.lsbu.ac.uk/cmcr
  • Centre for Research in Psychology www.lsbu.ac.uk/crp
  • Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Research www.lsbu.ac.uk/wcspr

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, ISSR researchers gained recognition for their world leading and/or international excellence in social policy; culture, communication and media; and psychology. LSBU's Social Policy research is ranked top of the post-92 instituions in the UK according to the RAE. This expertise is reflected in the wide range of external funding we receive from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for International Development (DfID), the British Academy, charities, government departments and local authorities. www.lsbu.ac.uk/ahs/research/highimpact
