About the School of Sociology and Social Policy

In the School of Sociology and Social Policy we are passionate about research that makes a difference in society on a local, national and global level. Building on our research strengths and a commitment to inclusive interdisciplinary approaches, we are working together to address some of the most significant challenges of the day. This ethos is embedded into all that we do.

Britain's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognises our programme of social research training, and we are ranked top 10 in the UK for social policy (The Complete University Guide, 2022).

Our vibrant research centres include:

  • Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS)
  • Centre for Research on Family, Life Course and Generations (FLAG)
  • Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (CIGS)
  • The Bauman Institute

We offer two kinds of research degree for postgraduate researchers:
