Cardiff School of Welsh (Ysgol y Gymraeg, Caerdydd) is a dynamic and successful school, conducting innovative and socially-relevant research while delivering teaching of the highest quality. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the School was recognised as evidencing work of both international and world-leading quality, and also ranked 6th in the UK for research in the area of Celtic Studies according to Research Power (one of the accepted measures).
The School of Welsh is one of the oldest departments of Welsh in Wales, and the oldest established Chair of Welsh is here in Cardiff. For over a century the department has contributed to the life and culture of Wales, and has produced eminent scholars and writers, including W. J. Gruffydd, G. J. Williams, A. O. H. Jarman and Saunders Lewis.
The School attracts funding from a wide range of sources, including the Leverhulme Trust, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy, the British Council and the EU.
Research at the School of Welsh
Research in the School ranges from the medieval to the contemporary, from poetry to prose and from children's literature to women's studies. It includes both Welsh language and Welsh literature and the School is leading the way in areas such as social and international aspects of language planning, critical theory and performance theory.
The School's two research units – the Cardiff Centre for Welsh American Studies and the Language, Policy and Planning Research Unit - drive interdisciplinary research and promote proactive engagement with innovative projects across the University, including collaboration with the Cardiff Humanities Research Institute.
The PhD Programme
There are facilities for suitable candidates to register for the degrees of MPhil or PhD. The doctoral degree scheme normally consists of three years' full-time study and MPhil is expected to take one or two years full-time. Opportunities are also available for part-time study.
Our commitment to working with the local community is reflected in the work of our Welsh Language Teaching Centre, whose staff teach Welsh to over 1,500 adults in the Cardiff area. The School has a second centre, namely the Cardiff Research Centre for Welsh-American Studies, whose aim is to study the culture, language, literature and history of the Welsh in the USA, Canada and Patagonia.
Funding Opportunities
The School offers a number of postgraduate funding opportunities; in addition, the University has been awarded a number of AHRC Postgraduate Studentships in Celtic Studies and Creative Writing via a Block Grant Partnership for 2009-2013.
