About the Project

North West Cancer Research Institute, School of Medical Sciences, Bangor University.

Project ID: BUK2173
Annual Stipend: £14,198
Application Deadline: 16th September 2018

Project Description

The process of oncogenesis is associated with the activation of many genes. Some of these genes are normally only expressed in the germline and are silenced in healthy somatic tissue. A number of studies have demonstrated that germline gene activation contributes to cancer development and progression and can be linked to poor patient prognosis, so these genes have garnered interest as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

The McFarlane Group has identified a number of novel germline genes that become activated and function in cancer progression and a new model for germline genes in oncogenesis has been put forward (McFarlane et al., 2014. Cell Cycle 13:2151-2152; McFarlane & Wakeman (2017) Cancer Research 77:5712-5716). This project will study the function of some of these genes and their utility as cancer biomarkers using high throughput instrumentation from Carl Zeiss Ltd. to assess a range of human cancer tissues.

Candidates will have a good first B.Sc. degree in an appropriate subject and must be a European Union citizen. Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Ramsay McFarlane ([Email Address Removed]). The start date will be 1st November 2018.

How to apply:

Applications should include a covering letter and CV with two named referees. Please send via email to Dr Ramsay McFarlane ([Email Address Removed]) and cc to Dr Penny Dowdney ([Email Address Removed]) by 17:00 on 16/09/18.
