  • Full or part time

    Applications accepted all year round
  • Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
    Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

Project Description

This project focuses on the practical assessment of patient credibility during interactions taking place at the emergency department of a Chinese public hospital. It examines the interactional strategies used by practitioners and patients to discuss credibility; the consequences of the credibility assessment on the handling of patients at the emergency department; and the role of culture in the assessment of credibility. The project includes 6 months of ethnographic fieldwork. Data-collection methods consist of daily observation, tape-recording of health care interactions, in-depth interviews with health care practitioners, and review of administrative data on the service and the clientele at the research site. Field notes, transcripts of naturally occurring interactions, interview transcripts and other documentary evidence gathered as part of the project will be analyzed in NVivo. Given the nature of the project, excellent Mandarin skills are required. Some familiarity with conversation analysis, ethnomethodology, or symbolic interaction would be an advantage.
