Developing and testing models of human tooth shape using dental radiographs

Background:

Human teeth vary in shape. The dimensions and shape of teeth from dental radiographs has not been studied in detail. Knowledge of the variation in crown and root dimensions of the mature tooth helps to define abnormal teeth as well as abnormal tooth eruption. This project will investigate the relationship between crown and root dimensions of teeth from dental radiographs of children and young adults using image analysis methods.

Aims:

The aims of the study include developing and testing models of human tooth shape from dental radiographs. Results will define normal tooth types with reference to the crown and root dimensions/shape and explore root growth during eruption. Such findings will have clinical impact in paediatric dentistry and help to identify tooth type, defining micro- and macrodontia and improving the estimation of fractional formation stages in addition to predicting abnormal eruption.
