Applications are invited for a PhD position funded by WIT Co-Fund PhD Scholarship, for a 4-year research project “Investigating the role of glatiramer in modulating immune effector cells in a model of choroidal neovascularization (CNV)”. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated, capable of working on his or her own initiative and fit in with the friendly atmosphere within the wider research team. This PhD Project will investigate the potential therapeutic use of glatiramer in advanced age-related macular degeneration. The project is a collaboration between Waterford Institute of Technology, The Vision Clinic (Kilkenny, Ireland), Institute of Inflammation and Ageing (University of Birmingham, UK) and Experimentica Ltd. (Finland). The PhD project will be for 4 years and will cover fees in addition to a personal stipend and research expenses.

Qualifications

Essential

• The successful candidate must have BSc hons (2.1 or 1.1) degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related discipline

Desirable

• MSc degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related discipline

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

• Experience in cell culture
• Experience in histology and Immunohistochemistry

Desirable

• Experience in working with rodents

Skills & Competencies

Essential

• The candidate must demonstrate a high motivation, initiative and ability to work within a multi-disciplinary project team to achieve results.
• Have an academic record of excellence, good writing and communication skills.
