The Limitations of Identity Politics - Project ID SAS0036 - exploring the current prominence of identity politics from a Lacanian and post-Lacanian perspective

This PhD will explore the current prominence of identity politics from a Lacanian and post-Lacanian perspective, with a view to interrogating the functioning, the limitations and the ramifications of this popular tendency and how it interacts variously with democratic potential and with the rise of populism.

Academic qualifications
A first degree (at least a 2.1) ideally in the humanities, social sciences or political theory with a good fundamental knowledge of psychoanalytic theory.

English language requirement
IELTS score must be at least 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components). Other, equivalent qualifications will be accepted. Full details of the University’s policy are available online.

• Competent in argument analysis
• Knowledge of the psychoanalytic cannon
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Strong motivation, with evidence of independent research skills relevant to the project
