About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship with the Optics and Photonics Group at the University of Nottingham.
The studentship will work in a project dedicated to develop nano-ultrasonic instrumentation specifically designed for live-cell imaging. Towards this aim, the studentship will among others:

1. Design, build and apply instrumentation in the areas of optics, ultrasound and electronics.
2. Design, model, build and apply optical elements particularly opto-acoustic transducers for biological applications.
3. Apply nano-ultrasonics to study biological specimens and biological questions.

You will join an established research team within the Optics and Photonics Group at Nottingham (University Park campus) and will be able to collaborate with key research groups and established research centres such as Cancer, Stem, Parasitology.

This project is part of a 5-year project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and will provide an excellent platform for career in the areas of, nano-ultrasonics, bio-photonics, microcopy and bio-engineering.

Applicants should have a background in electric/electronic engineering, physics or a related discipline, and have or expect to graduate a MSc level, or equivalent. Areas of of optics and photonics, ultrasonics or bio-engineering are desirable

Funding Notes

The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees and a full stipend at the RCUK rate for three years for UK students. EU students can apply if they have been living in the UK for the three previous years. For other EU students funding can support fees only.

This funding is not suitable for international students.

When applying for this studentship, please include the reference number (beginning ENG) within the personal statement section of the application. This will help in ensuring your application is sent directly to the academic advertising the studentship.
