About the Project

Many New Zealand sheep farmers are attempting to increase both the amount of home grown feed and stocking rates. These more intensive sheep farm systems are likely to result in greater nutrient losses in drainage and runoff, thereby resulting in a negative environmental effect. However, the choice of forage species may help to minimise or mitigate nutrient losses. A research site comprising 20 drainage plots has been established on a Massey University farm in order to investigate nutrient loss under a range of forage types and high sheep stocking rates.

This PhD project will involve the following elements:
1. Evaluation of drainage and nutrient leaching under a range of forage types including a perennial ryegrass/white clover sward (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens), brassica species, plantain (Plantago lanceolata).
2. Effect of forage type and annual and seasonal herbage yield on aspects of sheep performance.
3. Effect of forage type on carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.

Ideally the candidate would have an undergraduate degree in agricultural science, animal science, soil science, environmental science or agronomy with a Masters in a related field. The candidate must be able to start by March 2019 and meet the Massey University entry requirements. Good communication skills are required. Fieldwork and laboratory skills as well as experience with animal handling would be desirable or the candidate must be prepared to develop these skills.
This is a fully funded PhD scholarship (this includes a stipend and university fees for three years). Massey University is located in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
