About the Project

Meaningful life roles including employment are recognised as important factors in recovery for individuals with complex mental health problems. Research evidence suggests a relationship between participation in employment and improved mental health outcomes and the detrimental is an academic community including research staff, research assistants and doctoral candidates. This PhD studentship provides a unique opportunity to engage in a quantitative investigation of psychosocial factors and participation in employment for individuals with complex mental health problems.

If successful, you will complete the QMU PhD Programme as part of the Firefly Research team, an academic community of research staff, research assistants and doctoral candidates. Significant success with external research grants means we have developed a vibrant community of researchers, educators and practitioners. An excellent network of contacts and colleagues is available locally, as well as opportunities to develop an extensive international network through our status as a worldwide hub for research on the Model of Human Occupation.

Successful candidates will demonstrate interest and engagement with the proposed topic area and methodology. The focus of eventual study will be determined in negotiation with the supervisory team to fit with the research team portfolio of studies.

This studentship will provide the opportunity to develop knowledge and experience of a wide range of research methods and to engage in personalised training. The student will gain transferrable skills of networking, communication, presentation, and project management. This will be a demanding project that will require a dedicated student, though they will benefit from close support and guidance from a dedicated and enthusiastic research team. Requirements:

The PhD Studentships are open to UK, EU and international students.

Candidates should demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a PhD in 3 years. Other requirements:
• A 1st class honours degree and/or a relevant Masters degree with distinction or equivalent.
• If English is not your first language you’ll need IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (with a minimum 6.0 in each component).
• Additional Eligibility Criteria: Professional registration on the HCPC.
Funding notes
Successful candidate will receive:
• an annual stipend of £ 14,553, lasting three years for full time study,
• tuition fees paid at the UK/EU rate,
• a research support allowance of £2,000.
