  Prof J-C Tan  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

3.5-year D.Phil. studentship, available from January 2019 (subject to eligibility requirements below).

Research Area

The studentship is part of a major ERC Consolidator Grant project: PROMOFS – “Nanoengineering and Processing of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Composites for Photonic Sensors” being undertaken by the University of Oxford under the European Commission Horizon 2020 funding programme.

This ambitious programme will develop and apply cutting-edge experimental and theoretical techniques to make new breakthroughs in the emerging field of Guest@MOF sensing technology. The vision is to harness the structural, physical and chemical diversity of MOFs to afford nanoengineering of revolutionary functional devices for detection of mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical and optical stimuli.

The studentship will focus on experimental studies involving novel materials processing, prototype device fabrication, and performance characterisation via advanced spectroscopy techniques.

The DPhil student will become a member of the Multifunctional Materials & Composites Group and will be supervised by Prof. Jin-Chong Tan. Further information on the group can be found at www.eng.ox.ac.uk/tan

Award Value

The studentship covers a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £22,000 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further 2.5 years. The studentship does not cover the payment of University fees (c £4463 p.a. UK/EU students) or college fees (c £3215 p.a.).

Eligibility

The studentship is available to UK or EU nationals only.

Candidate Requirement

Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

- A first class or high upper second class honours degree in Engineering Science, Physics, Nanoscience, Materials or Chemistry;
- Experience of materials-oriented research demonstrated by a publication in an international conference, journal, or a first-class final year project report;
- Excellent English written and spoken communication skills;

The following skills are desirable but not essential:

- Experience of nanomaterials characterisation techniques (for studentship 1);

Application Procedure

Interested candidates are strongly advised to contact Professor Tan ([Email Address Removed]) with a copy of their CV before making a formal application. However, please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

Candidates must submit a graduate application form and are expected to meet the graduate admissions criteria. Details are available on the Engineering course page of the University website. Further details about making a graduate application are available at www.eng.ox.ac.uk/study-here/postgraduate/how-to-apply. You are strongly advised to look at the application requirements early on and not wait until the deadline. The application should be filled in with a start date of January 2019.

Please quote 19ENGMM_JCT in all correspondence and in your graduate application.

Application deadline: 16 November 2018, noon

Start date: January 2019
