Applications accepted all year round
About the Project
The School of Mathematical Sciences of Queen Mary University of London invite applications for a PhD project commencing in January 2019. The deadline for funded applications is 21 December 2018.
The focus of the research project will be on the role of symmetries and energy (or more generally charges) in both classical and quantum gravitational physics. The definition of charges and their relation to underlying symmetries
is a subtle issue in gravitational physics. The project will study how these charges can be derived from underlying symmetries and how we can decide whether they are conserved or not. The results of this research will have important consequences for our understanding of dynamical processes in gravity, as well as for black hole physics.
Keywords: General relativity, gravitational physics, black holes, symmetries.
Requirements: Minimum of an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (mathematics or physics), or an appropriate Master’s degree (with Merit). Prior knowledge of general relativity and quantum field theory would be useful.
This project is eligible for full funding, including support for 3 years’ study, additional funds for conference and research visits and funding for relevant IT needs. Applicants interested in the full funding will have to participate in a highly competitive selection process.
Funding Notes
The studentship is funded by the Royal Society. The studentship arrangement will cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend for up to three years (Currently set as £16,777 in 2018/19) and additional funds for conference and research visits and funding for relevant IT needs. There will be the possibility of extending this for a further 6 months pending successful progress through the degree.
