Dr R Morris
Applications accepted all year round
About the Project
Research in the Morris group concentrates on the synthesis, characterisation and applications of inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid porous solids. There is a specific opening at the moment for a PhD to develop a novel synthesis technique (ionothermal synthesis) based on using ionic liquids as green solvents to prepare new inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid solids (e.g. metal organic frameworks). The research is aimed at developing the materials for delivering biological amounts of the medically important gas nitric oxide.
The work has aspects of inorganic synthesis, green chemistry and structural characterisation and will involve the student gaining experience in several different areas of chemistry, including a small amount of biology. The investigation of applications and properties of the novel materials prepared is an important aspect.
Applicants should have (or be about to receive) an honours degree in chemistry or a related subject. The studentship offers tuition fees and a maintenance grant in accordance with Research Council eligibility criteria.
Students interested in undertaking a PhD in the Morris group in this research area should register their interest as soon as possible. Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Russell Morris ([Email Address Removed]).
Potential applicants are welcome to arrange to visit St Andrews at any time and there will be a chemistry postgraduate open day in St Andrews on the afternoon of Friday the 23rd of November 2007.
Please see:http://ch-www.st-andrews.ac.uk/PGadmissions.html for the application procedure or e-mail [Email Address Removed] for more information.
