About the Project

The interaction of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems can provide important information on the central respiratory rhythm and hence on the health of normal and elderly subjects during exercise and of patients in intensive care.
At present it is extremely difficult to make non-invasive measurements of the central respiratory rhythm in humans, yet this information may be crucial for the management of patients in intensive care. It has been known for many years that the central respiratory rhythm is multiply expressed in the efferent activity of the autonomic nervous system. We have had considerable success in measuring such expression from respiratory sinus arrhythmia and baroreflex sensitivity. Yet there are also many other autonomic efferents that also express the central respiratory rhythm.
This project will identify parameters for measuring the central respiratory rhythm in normal subjects that may be suitable for non for clinical evaulation.
Applicaticants will be expected to have a strong background in human physiology, excellent practical laboratory skills and excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with healthy volunteers and patients.
